Eating Well in Wai‘anae

Members of CTAHR teamed up with volunteers from WCCHC, Kamehameha Schools, Sacred Hearts Church, and Hoa Aina O Makaha to do some good on the West side. At ‘Ohana Night at Wai‘anae Elementary, a nutrition outreach event coordinated with Wai‘anae Coast Comprehensive Health Center and Hawaii Foodbank, they were provided over 12,700 pounds of food, including 700 pounds of locally grown produce,to 581 community members in need of sustenance!

The CTAHR Children’s Healthy Living (CHL) Program headed by Rachel Novotny (HNFAS) was recognized April 25 by the USDA’s National Institute of Food and Agriculture (NIFA). CHL won the Mission Integration of Research, Education, and Extension Award for working across all three of NIFA’s mission areas to produce positive outcomes in agriculture, the environment, communities, or people.

The Best Food 5 April 2019

The Best Food

Getting hungry? Well, if you’re on the UHM campus, you’re in luck—did you know the campus’s food is rated as the best in the country, according to Forbes Magazine? And this is thanks in no small part to Donna Ojiri, an alumna of HNFAS’ FSHN program, who runs the Sodexo Hawaii food service program.

To Animal Sciences, With Love 6 March 2019

To Animal Sciences, With Love

Alumna Teresa Morishita has established a scholarship through UH Foundation. Associate Dean for Academic Affairs and a professor of Poultry Medicine & Food Safety at Western University of Health Sciences College of Veterinary Medicine, she is a 1984 graduate of CTAHR’s undergrad Animal Sciences program and has fond memories of many ANSC faculty members.

Give Healthfully 6 March 2019

Give Healthfully

A cheering chili pepper? A talking tomato? No, they’re dietetics and FSHN students from HNFAS! Monica Esquivel and the nutrition students are featured and thanked in a video recently created by the American Heart Association for their annual Heart Ball. The video, which was shared with over 1200 Heart Ball attendees, highlights the Kokua the Need campaign to which the dietetics students and Monica contributed.

What to Eat 22 February 2019

What to Eat

The nutritional health of all Americans is informed by a federal Dietary Guidelines Advisory Committee—which now includes CTAHR’s own Rachel Novotny (HNFAS). Appointed by Secretary of Agriculture Sonny Perdue and Health and Human Services Secretary Alex Azar, Rachel will be joining 19 other nationally recognized scientists on this independent advisory committee.

A Fine Day for Swine 14 February 2019

A Fine Day for Swine

With their omnivorous appetites and modest housing needs, pigs are an important part of food security in the Islands, and CTAHR Extension is getting swine producers the help they need to keep local pork production safe and sustainable. Livestock Extension agent Savannah Katulski hosted a Kaua‘i Swine Day this month at the Kaua‘i Agricultural Research Station.

An Egg Up on the Competition 7 February 2019

An Egg Up on the Competition

HNFAS alumna Phyllis Shimabukuro-Geiser has been appointed acting chair of the Hawaii State Board of Agriculture. Phyllis graduated with a BS in Animal Sciences from CTAHR and earned an MS in Poultry Science from UC-Davis. She has been the deputy chair of Board of Agriculture since 2015. Previously, Phyllis was the vice-president and CEO of Mikilua Poultry Farm.

A Better Beef

Savannah Katulski, a Kaua‘i junior Extension agent, has been awarded a $750 scholarship by the Roy A. Goff Memorial Endowment Fund to support her participation in the Beef Improvement Federation Symposium and Convention in South Dakota. Savannah will use this opportunity to bring research information, new tools and resources back to Hawai‘i to help improve beef carcass quality and genetics for local production systems.
