Visit With a Visiting Scholar

Fulbright scholar S.M. Kamruzzaman will give two lectures on animal science on Monday, July 2. The first, at 10 a.m., will be on “Medicinal Plants with Anti-Platelet Activity.” The second, at 2:00 p.m., will focus on “Transboundary Animal Diseases in South Asia: Concerns and Challenges.” Both will be in AgSci 219.

CTAHR and Hainan University have entered into an MOU establishing the Joint Laboratory of Food, Nutrition and Health, which will be housed at the Hainan University campus. CTAHR faculty will work as visiting researchers there, and Hainan University students and graduates will be recruited for UH programs.

Outstanding for the Animals

Animal scientist, CTAHR alumnus, and retired HNFAS professor Jim Carpenter has received the 2018 Outstanding Alumni Award from the College of Agriculture and Life Sciences at the University of Vermont. Jim got his MS in Animal Nutrition from CTAHR in 1969 and returned to teach here after getting his PhD.

Eat and Learn

During the Spring 2018 semester, HNFAS provided more than 4000 muffins and 1000 Grab and Go meals to students for free. Food preparation was a joint effort of Joannie Dobbs and Alan Titchenal (both HNFAS), with volunteer help from HNFAS students Simen Sam, Vanessa Almeida, Katie Seaton, and Nicole Tomasa.

Rajesh Jha (HNFAS) co-authored a new publication, “Of turtles and trees: Nutritional analysis of tree heliotrope (Heliotropium foertherianum) leaves consumed by green turtles (Chelonia mydas) in Hawaiʻi,” about a new food turtles have recently been observed eating: leaves that fall from the popular coastal tree called tree heliotrope.
