HNFAS professor’s family loves this Thanksgiving recipe

“The stuffing tends to be a favorite part of the meal and is usually the first bowl to be emptied,” says professor Rachel Novotny of the Dept. of Human Nutrition, Food and Animal Sciences. Professor honored for obesity prevention locally and internationally

Congratulations to Jinan Banna, who has been distinguished by the American Society for Nutrition with a Nutrition Education and Behavioral Sciences Research Interest Section Mid-Career Award. This highly competitive award is presented to a mid-career investigator who demonstrates outstanding research and contributions to the field of nutrition education and/or behavior change.

Normally celebrated at the CTAHR Annual Banquet, this year’s Dean’s Award recipients will be honored here, on your laptops and tablets, and with their names carved into the plaques that adorn Gilmore Hall. Prize monies will also be distributed. The 2020 Dean’s Award for Ka Pouhana mentorship goes to Kacie Ho, assistant professor in food science.

Wagyu, a Japanese breed of cattle, produces high-quality meat prized by chefs the world over. Unfortunately for steak lovers, Wagyu are also known for having poor reproductive rates. But Kyle Caires is on a mission to change that. He just took the next step forward in his long-term quest to improve the reproductive technologies of cattle with his latest paper.

Pigs and Papaya

CTAHR Extension is helping two industries save each other

The pig farmers had no feed for their pigs. The papaya farmers had no market for their papayas. But CTAHR brought them together. Extension livestock agent Mike DuPonte, a member of the Hawaii Island Pork Association, is coordinating with Hawaii Papaya Industry Association president Eric Weinert to feed surplus papayas to the pigs.

Alumnus publishes veterinary joke book

Love animals and need a laugh? Tyler Primavera, an ANSC major who graduated from CTAHR a few years ago, has published a book of jokes about animals and vet school. Tyler, originally from Kailua, is now a veterinary student in Italy and is showing that the serious business of learning to be a veterinarian doesn’t have to be so serious after all!
