Shell Gain

Members of two departments collaborated to publish a new study in the prestigious journal Nature Scientific Report. Co-authors Nirvay Sah, Birendra Mishra, and Rajesh Jha (all HNFAS) and Donna Lee Kuehu (MBBE) discussed novel genes that are involved in the regulation of egg formation in poultry.

PhD student Solange Saxby (HNFAS) was recently honored with a $3,500 award from the C-MAIKI #mahimicrobe2018 graduate competition for her innovative research proposal to simulate human digestion and fecal fermentation to study kalo as a functional prebiotic food. As an awardee, Solange will present her work at the C-MĀIKI symposium on May 9, 2019.

Rajesh Jha (HNFAS) delivered a keynote speech at the Poultry Nutrition and Health Forum in Beijing focused on “Fermentable Carbohydrates in Poultry Nutrition to Modulate Gut Health.” Fermentable carbohydrates, considered an alternative to antibiotics in poultry feed, are becoming increasingly important as many consumers are looking for chicken raised without antibiotics.

MS alumna Keano Pavlosky, now in medical school at JABSOM, is first author of a recently published article, “The Effects of Transfer From Steady-State to Tidally-Changing Salinities on Plasma and Branchial Osmoregulatory Variables in Adult Mozambique Tilapia,” based on the MS thesis she completed in the lab of co-author Andre Seale (HNFAS).

In a recent Star-Advertiser column, HNFAS nutritionists Joannie Dobbs and Alan Titchenal discuss the role that social media can play in affecting and maintaining people’s health. They point out that a lot of what we read on social media about food and diet can be “biased and misleading,” especially if it’s disseminated by special interest groups with their own agendas.

Monica Esquivel (HNFAS) took a visit to the Kaleiopu‘u Elementary kindergarten classrooms to share information about nutrition, physical activity, and community resources for healthy eating and food. The presentation was a part of a project to help the 135 kindergarteners at Kaleiopu‘u learn about healthy food choices and exercise.

Both graduates of BYU, the brothers created a guide to assist BYU students entitled Acing BYU that includes everything from lists of resources for scholarships, internships, and other opportunities to broader tips and life lessons.
