As part of a collaboration between livestock Extension agent Kyle Caires and King Kekaulike High School’s Agricultural Program in Maui, Phase III of forage research and pasture trials started on January 2 with new plantings of pasture grasses and forage crops. This collaboration has generated valuable data for industry and provided hands-on learning opportunities for high school ag students.

Animal Health and Handling

Kyle Caires (HNFAS) wrapped up a productive year in livestock extension by hosting an animal health and handling workshop on Maui for more than 40 4-H youth and adults in early December at Kaonoulu Ranch. Attendees got hands-on experience administering dewormers and vaccines, as well as trimming hoofs and treating hoof problems in sheep and goats.

Shell Gain

Members of two departments collaborated to publish a new study in the prestigious journal Nature Scientific Report. Co-authors Nirvay Sah, Birendra Mishra, and Rajesh Jha (all HNFAS) and Donna Lee Kuehu (MBBE) discussed novel genes that are involved in the regulation of egg formation in poultry.

More Microbe Magic

PhD student Solange Saxby (HNFAS) was recently honored with a $3,500 award from the C-MAIKI #mahimicrobe2018 graduate competition for her innovative research proposal to simulate human digestion and fecal fermentation to study kalo as a functional prebiotic food. As an awardee, Solange will present her work at the C-MĀIKI symposium on May 9, 2019.

An Alternative to Antibiotics

Rajesh Jha (HNFAS) delivered a keynote speech at the Poultry Nutrition and Health Forum in Beijing focused on “Fermentable Carbohydrates in Poultry Nutrition to Modulate Gut Health.” Fermentable carbohydrates, considered an alternative to antibiotics in poultry feed, are becoming increasingly important as many consumers are looking for chicken raised without antibiotics.

MS alumna Keano Pavlosky, now in medical school at JABSOM, is first author of a recently published article, “The Effects of Transfer From Steady-State to Tidally-Changing Salinities on Plasma and Branchial Osmoregulatory Variables in Adult Mozambique Tilapia,” based on the MS thesis she completed in the lab of co-author Andre Seale (HNFAS).

Healthy Facts About Social Media

In a recent Star-Advertiser column, HNFAS nutritionists Joannie Dobbs and Alan Titchenal discuss the role that social media can play in affecting and maintaining people’s health. They point out that a lot of what we read on social media about food and diet can be “biased and misleading,” especially if it’s disseminated by special interest groups with their own agendas.
