In October of this year, results from a recent Gallup Survey of Alumni (between 1951-2017) were presented to Faculty and Administration. The purpose of the survey was to assess alumni’s “perceptions of the university experiences and how those experiences related to their well-being and job quality later in life.

The poll addressed overall well being (great jobs, great lives) of students and focused on the importance of mentoring experiences, whether curriculum prepared them for a career, and whether internship/job opportunities allowed them to apply what they were learning in the classroom.

UHM alumni students that responded to the survey (14%) exceeded R1 Universities in well being, but they had one of the lower employee/workplace engagement rankings.

The four key areas that consistently made a difference in overall well being were:

1. Did the professors care about me (did they know my name): 27% strongly agreed
2. Did a mentor encourage them to pursue goals and dreams: 25% strongly agreed
3. Did they have at least one Professor that made them excited about learning: 65 % strongly agreed.
4. Did internships/jobs allow them to apply what they were learning in the classroom: 54% strongly agreed.

The survey results were quite interesting, and incorporate all of the UH System Institutions.
