On April 22nd, our ASAO office and Ambassadors went “on the road” to the UH Manoa Sustainability Garden to celebrate Earth Day CTAHR style. To enlighten the public about the powerful protein properties of insects, Ka Mea Kolo, CTAHR’s Entomology club passed out Chocolate Chirp Cookies (made with cricket powder) and enticed passers-by with multiple flavors of dried cricket treats. Friends of the Family gave seeds to prize winners of a family friendly bean bag toss game and Dr. Kobayashi’s TPSS lab wow-ed attendees with their Controlled Environment Agriculture table display. CTAHR Ambassadors helped participants pot various veggie seeds and gave out microgreen kits from the Coalition to Stop Campus Hunger. The Hawaii Botanical Society offered free plants to those that correctly answered tricky earth day trivia, the Campus Arboretum talked story about mulch and the Botanical Society of America helped to spread the word about how to save ʻōhiʻa lehua trees. Community partners joined in the fun as well, with the City & County of Honolulu Storm Water Division sharing about how to protect our streams and ocean from dangerous run-off and KUPU explaining how their environmental programs offer exciting internships and learning opportunities and careers in environmental management.
