Review of Recruitment in Fall 2019

Review of Recruitment in Fall 2019

Fall 2019 was a strong semester for recruitment in CTAHR. The bulk of our efforts focused on local high schools in partnership events including the Admissions office meet and greet with Waipahu High School and the Farm to School perspectives trip with Leilehua high school. In our efforts to raise awareness of CTAHR nationally, we worked with the Admissions Office to show a class from Washington State the amazing works in CTAHR through hands-on activities with all our undergraduate programs. In partnership with the Hawaii chapter of FFA, CTAHR program brochures were distributed at the National FFA Conference in Indianapolis, IN. The appeal of going to school in Hawaii drew a large crowd, however, not surprisingly, Animal Science was the most popular major. With the help of faculty in attendance at the SACNAS Conference, we were connected with community college students from across the nation interested in STEM.  Similarly, CTAHR had an amazing turnout at Welina Manoa and engaged with current students at the very beginning of the Fall semester.

To reach out to our local high school counselors, we participated in the Admissions Office's High School Counselors Workshop. Subsequently, we also put together a tour of CTAHR programs for a select number of counselors particularly interested in learning a little bit more about us. We continue to attend the Honolulu National College Fair and host our monthly email campaign to counselors and prospective students of all ages interested in our programs.

At the 2019 Hawaii Ag Conference, we chatted with high school attendees as well as potential partners of the college. Other public events include our stop in San Diego for the Southern California Plumeria Festival, where a portion of the proceeds from their plumeria has gone to plumeria research in CTAHR. We introduced CTAHR to many passionate plumeria growers and even found some CTAHR alumni along the way.
