How the Rules Are Working

Aurora Saulo (TPSS) was one of the experts consulted for Food Safety Magazine’s article “What Have We Learned About FSMA Implementation?” The feature asks the specialists, “Describe what you feel are the strengths and weaknesses of the FSMA regulations.” As Aurora explains, the Food Safety Modernization Act was enacted at a good time, when there was a greater public awareness of food and health issues, including foodborne illnesses. The community is therefore in a better position to understand and agree with the law. Unfortunately, she adds, “the introduction of FSMA implies that the U.S. had a widespread problem with the safety of the foods that are sold and consumed in the nation. And some expected the law to completely eliminate unsafe foods,” a goal that may be unrealistic. She notes, “As trainers, we must communicate that food safety is a responsibility that everyone must bear, from the grower and harvester to the consumer. There are no exceptions.” Read the article here to find out more.
