More than 1,200 participants representing 55 countries attended the 21st Hawaiʻi International Conference on Education – which gave plenty of exposure for the posters and talks given by the Dept. of Tropical Plant and Soil Sciences.

Harrison Reed, graduate student of Kent Kobayashi, co-presented the poster “An Individualized Mentor-Mentee Course to Supplement a Graduate Scientific Communications Course.” Kent presented the talks “Helping Students and the Public Engage in Hawaii’s Self-Sufficiency in Food Production” and “A Mentee-Mentor Research Relationship in a Lab on the Edge of Forever,” the latter co-authored by his graduate student Brylin Nelson.

“It is a truly amazing experience to learn about the diversity of topics within the various fields of education from around the world at just one conference!” said Kauahi Perez, while Kent said, “This conference was an excellent opportunity to showcase some of our innovative educational techniques involving scientific communication, mentoring, and controlled environment agriculture,” and Harrison added, “This event was a great opportunity to demonstrate our innovative approaches to education, and to learn from the other professionals that attended.”

Held Jan. 3-6 at the Hilton Hawaiian Village Waikiki Beach Resort, the HICE conference is a gathering place for academicians and professionals from education and related fields from all over the world. The main goal is to provide an opportunity for academicians and professionals from various education-related fields from all over the world to come together and learn from each other. An additional goal of the conference is to provide a place for academicians and professionals with cross-disciplinary interests related to education to meet and interact with members, inside and outside their own particular disciplines.
