Darwin Day @ Insect Museum

After a three-year hiatus, members of the UH community excitedly gathered at the UH Insect Museum on February 16 to celebrate the 214th birthday of Charles Darwin. Visitors to the Dept. of Plant and Environmental Protection Sciences were able to view the museum’s impressive collection of more than 300,000 insect specimens, interact with a variety of live marine invertebrates, and enjoy a generous spread of refreshments – including insect-based snacks!

Darwin Day is celebrated by naturalists around the world to honor Charles Darwin’s contributions to evolutionary science. Home to over 9,000 endemic species, Hawaiʻi is a hotbed for evolutionary research and conservation studies.

“The number of evolutionary studies that come out of Hawaiʻi are incredible and a lot of them have to do with the insects here, so it’s only appropriate that we celebrate Charles Darwin on his birthday,” said Daniel Rubinoff, entomology professor and director of the UH Insect Museum.
