In 1962, Catherine Cavaletto moved to Hawaiʻi to take a job as a research assistant in the Dept. of Food Science and Technology. What was meant to last only a few years turned into a 41-year career at CTAHR, where Catherine became a horticulturist, professor, department chair, and associate dean of the college.

Catherine, who retired to Goleta, California in 2003, passed on November 29 in Aliso Viejo.

“Cathy’s sensory evaluation research on factors affecting product quality of commodities that were in development or explored for production, such as grass-fed beef, mac nuts, Kona coffee, papaya (conventionally bred and transgenic ‘Rainbow’), breadfruit, peach palm and taro, contributed tremendously to the growth of diversified agriculture,” says Tessie Amore of the Dept. of Tropical Plant & Soil Sciences.
