A Lyon of a Celebration

Lyon Arboretum is giving a Centennial Symposium as part of their celebration of their hundredth anniversary, and CTAHR will have a strong presence there. Among the many presentations scheduled for the Symposium are the following horticultural gems: In TPSS, Richard Criley will speak on “Rhodies, Gingers, and Heliconias,” and Orville Baldos will address “Leaf Propagation and Indoor Light Tolerance of Four Native Hawaiian Peperomia species.” TPSS alumnus Chipper Wichman, now director of the National Tropical Botanical Garden, will give an overview of “The Evolution of Plant Conservation in Hawai’i.” Lyon Arboretum staff, including TPSS alumna Nellie Sugii, will give a panel discussion, while another TPSS alumnus and Lyon staff member, Timothy Kroessig, now pursuing graduate studies in the Botany department, will cover “Pollination Biology of Hawaiian Lysimachia (Primulaceae).” In PEPS, Janice Uchida will discuss “Survival of the ‘Ohi‘a Rust, Austropuccini psidii, in Nature,” while Paul Krushelnycky will explain “The Ecology and Management of the Invasive Thief Ant, Solenopsis papuana.” Christine Elliott will present on “Restoration Implications of Native Hawaiian Seedling Survivorship in a Common Garden Greenhouse Environment.” Former PEPS faculty Will Haines, now with DOFAW, will discuss “Quantification of Threats to the Kamehameha butterfly (Vanessa tameamea) and Attempts to Reintroduce It to Restored Habitats in the Southern Ko‘olau Mountains.” And in NREM, Susan Crow will speak on “Interactive Feedbacks of Temperature, Mineralogy, and Microbes on Soil Carbon.” Don’t miss these and more great presentations! It’s all happening September 13–14 in the Keoni Auditorium in the East West Center’s Imin Conference Center on the UHM campus.
