Alohanema in Alaska!

Anchorage, Alaska, was the site of the Society of Nematologists’ 61st Annual Meeting – and Koon-Hui Wang, Brent Sipes, and Zhiqiang Cheng from the Dept. of Plant and Environmental Protection Sciences were happy they brought along their graduate students.

Roshan Paudel, Lauren Braley, and Landon Wong of PEPS’ Tropical Plant Pathology program, along with Auburn U. grad student Claire Schloemer, not only competed in the Cobb Bowl (a nematode jeopardy game), the team (named “Aloha Nema,” aka “Alohanema”) won the Championship!, outperforming six other teams from across the U.S. and Canada.

The team also contributed four oral presentations and two posters from their research in Hawaiʻi, and met in person with co-PIs from Alabama and a collaborator from North Carolina to plan their 2nd Year progress on a NIFA OREI project, “Organic Sweetpotato IPM and Soil Health Management for Small- and Mid-Size Farms.”

“The Alohanema team greatly enjoyed their conference experience along with us advisors!” says Koon-Hui.
