Pathogens Beware!

Cherisse Chun and Bog Eum (Grace) Lee, MS candidates in Food Science recently won first and second places at the Food Microbiology Division Student Competition at the 2018 Institute of Food Technologists (IFT) meeting at Chicago. Both work in Soojin Jun’s food engineering lab.

Based on their presentations and interviews, Cherisse received the $1,000 first-prize award and Grace the $750 second-prize award and recognition by Phi Tau Sigma, the Honor Society of Food Science and Technology. Cherisse presented “Removal of Escherichia coli K12 from contaminated tap water using a single-stage dielectrophoresis (DEP) device filled with glass beads,” and Grace presented “A portable electrochemical impedance immunosensor with applied mechanical vibration for on-site detection of Listeria monocytogenes.”

More information can be found at the IFT website. The instittue is the primary international professional association for food scientists. This year’s annual meeting hosted more than 23,000 food scientists, students, R&D professionals, suppliers, marketers and others involved in the food industry.
