Develop curriculum and provide formal and informal education; conduct and deliver applied research to the community. Subjects are sustainable development, entrepreneurship, natural resource management, business management, and human resource development, including strategic planning, leadership, capacity building and personal financial management. Accomplishments include: ●Authored or co-authored, produced, and edited more than 235 journal articles, books, book chapters, workbooks, fact sheets, newsletters, posters, and other publications, as well as videos. Co-developed AgCamp-Strival Training that was accepted into the Governor's Turn-of-the-Year Innovations Conference, 1994. Co-author of 1991 article selected for reprint in “The Classics Collection” in Journal of Tourism Studies, 2003. Collaborated with Hawaii Ecotourism Assocation (HEA) on Ke Ala Moa‘e -The Tradewind Trail ecotourism project that was awarded a Keep It Hawaii certificate of merit, 2004. Awarded second place for “Excellence in Economic Development Research” by the University Economic Development Association’s Annual Summit as a multi-state team member of the Community Business Matching Program, an integrated research and extension effort, 2008 and first place, 2010. Member of extension teams selected as Hawaii finalist or Nevada finalist for the Western Extension Directors’ Award, 2009 (NV), 2010 (NV), 2011 (HI). Co-author of article awarded outstanding paper in Invasive Plant Science and Management by the Weed Science Society of America, 2015. ●Organized or co-organized, and/or spoke at more than 210 conferences, short courses, workshops, meetings, and seminars on a variety of community economic development issues in locations across Hawaii; clients include government agencies, businesses, community associations and non-profit organizations. Awarded the Hung Wo and Elizabeth Lau Ching Foundation Award for Faculty Service to the Community from UHM, 2007. ●Taught undergraduate and graduate courses. Advised and mentored undergraduate and graduate students. Awarded the Ka Pouhana (Mentoring) Award from CTAHR, 2000 and the Mentor of the Year from NREM Graduate Student Organization, 2014. Certified Mini-Society Trainer, an experienced-based system to teach 8-12 year-olds about entrepreneurship. Nominated for Excellence in Teaching award, 1989, 1991, 1992, 2012, 2013, 2014, 2015. ●Secured almost $4.2 million in grants as principal investigator, co-principal investigator, or collaborator on a variety of extension and research projects. ●Provided professional assistance to government agencies, professional associations, community groups, businesses, non-profit organizations and university faculty in Hawaii, throughout the rest of the nation and in countries around the world. Served on the Hawaii Rural Development Council. Elected to serve two terms on the UHM Faculty Senate Executive Committee,1994-96, 2006-08 and selected to serve as Chair of the UHM General Education Committee, 2004-2005. Selected for the Fulbright Senior Specialists Roster, 2002. Selected for the Western Extension Leadership Development Program, 2009. Included in Marquis Who’s Who in America, 2009. Worked as Special advisor to the HEA since 2000 to develop the its third party Sustainable Tourism Certification Program, one of only two such state programs in the US, and obtained $100,000 in funding for HEA to support the effort. ●Undergraduate Program Chair, 2010-2011 Developed a student handbook, orientation program and increased enrollment by 29%. ●Interim Associate Dean and Director of Extension, 2009-2010 Administered the Hawaii Cooperative Extension Service with faculty statewide at the community level in four different counties and six academic departments. Awarded the Alvin T. and Charlotte C. Nakamura 'Hoku' Leadership Award in 2011 Fulbright Visiting Scholar, 2005 National School of Agriculture, Meknes Morocco Determined the feasibility of promotional programs for Moroccan agricultural products and examined possibilities for generic publicity of Moroccan agricultural commodities. Worked with Dr. Ali Abidar at the National School of Agriculture. ●Agribusiness Development Specialist, 2000 Cooperative State Research, Education, and Extension Service and the Rural Business Cooperative Service, United States Department of Agriculture Member of 4-person team working on a project funded by U.S. Agency for International Development in cooperation with South Africa’s National Department of Agriculture and AFRICARE. Developed a “train the trainer” curricula for extension educators and piloted the curricula in the rural areas of Msinga and Nebo, South Africa. Highest ranking candidate for the team from a nationwide pool of 64 applicants. ●Department Chair, Department of Agricultural and Resource Economics, 1997 – 1998 Administered a unit with research, extension and instructional programs, including a graduate program, an undergraduate program and three large UHM service courses. Managed 14 faculty in five locations and an office staff of four. Significantly upgraded departmental infrastructure and produced the first departmental accomplishment report. ●Graduate Program Chair, Department of Agricultural and Resource Economics, 1996 – 1999 Administered graduate program, including departmental research assistants and teaching assistants. Streamlined the program in response to a decline in resources. Received unanimous rankings of “highest satisfaction” from students in response to a 1999 program evaluation assessing my performance as Graduate Chair. Received the Ka Pouhana (Mentoring) Award from CTAHR as a result of nomination by NREM Graduate Student Organization, 2000.
