Candidate Seminars: Joonil Seog
MBBE faculty candidate Joonil Seog will be presenting teaching and research seminars, so come evaluate his work and give feedback on the hiring decision! On Monday, April 23, from 2:15 to 3:45 p.m., he will give his teaching seminar in St. John 011. In “Introduction to Biomaterials: Natural Biomaterials,” Dr. Seog will examine the relationship between structure and function of natural biomaterials and discuss physical properties of natural biomaterials and their origins, showing molecular-level interactions between biomacromolecules. He will also discuss how molecular-level interactions can be engineered to design novel biomaterials with tailored properties. On Tuesday, April 24, from 2:00 to 3:30 p.m., he will give his research seminar in Ag. Sci 219. In “Dynamic Self-Assembly of Biomacromolecules at the Single Molecule and Nanoscale Level,” he will talk about one-dimensional nanostructures as the ideal building blocks for functional nanoscale assembly. As he explains, peptide-based nanofibers have a high potential in building smart hierarchical structures due to their tunable structures at the single residue level and their ability to reconfigure themselves dynamically in response to environmental stimuli. The fundamental knowledge from the study he will describe can be applied to design a mechanically tailored DNA complex which may enhance transfection efficiency by temporally and spatially controlling the stability of the complex. Dr. Seog is a scientific reviewer in the Division of Neurological and Physical Medicine Devices at the Food and Drug Administration, before which he was an assistant professor in the Department of Materials Science and Engineering at the University of Maryland. He received his B.S. and M.S. degrees in chemical technology from Seoul National University in Korea and his Sc.D. degree in polymer science and technology from Massachusetts Institute of Technology. Come hear more about his technically advanced research!
