Pathogens & Hosts

Over nine Ustilago species have been reported to occur in Hawaii (Raabe, et al., 1981). The following is a list of the reported pathogens from this genus (Ustilago) and the hosts they infect. The list is organized by the scientific name of the pathogen species (CAPITAL LETTERS), followed by the symptom or disease a given pathogen causes on the listed hosts.

USTILAGO AVENAE

Loose Smut:

  • cultivated oats (Avena sativa)

USTILAGO BULLATA

  • rescue grass (Bromus catharticus)

USTILAGO CYNODONTIS

Smut:

  • Bermuda grass (Cynodon dactylon)

USTILAGO HORDEI

Covered Smut:

  • cultivated barley (Hordeum vulgare)

USTILAGO MAYDIS

Smut:

  • corn, maize (Zea mays)
  • sweet corn (Zea mays var. saccharata)

USTILAGO PANICI-PROLIFERI

Smut:

  • waicaku grass (Panicum repens)

Smut:

  • sugar cane (Saccharum officinarum)

USTILAGO UTRICULOSA

Smut:

  • kamale (Polygonum glabrum)
  • Polygonum punctatum
