Pathogens & Hosts

Over thirteen Helminthosporium species have been reported to occur in Hawaii (Raabe, et al., 1981). The following is a list of the reported pathogens from this genus (Helminthosporium) and the hosts they infect. The list is organized by the scientific name of the pathogen species (CAPITAL LETTERS), followed by the symptom or disease a given pathogen causes on the listed hosts.

  • false staghorn fern (Dicranopteris linearis)

Sooty Spike:

  • smut grass (Sporobolus africanus)
  • West Indies smut grass (Sporobolus indicus)

Leafspot:

  • para gras(Panicum purpurascens)
  • pearl millet (Pennisetum glaucum)
  • napier grass (Pennisetum purpureum)

Other:

  • sugar can(Saccharum officinarum)

Silver Scurf:

  • potato (Solanum tuberosum)

  • banana (Musa acuminata, AAA)
  • bamboo palm (Rhapis excelsa)
  • montbretia (Tritonia sp.)
  • Manilla grass (Zoysia matrella)

  • molasses grass (Melinis minutiflora)
  • para grass (Panicum purpurascens)
  • sorghum (Sorghum bicolor)
  • corn, maize (Zea mays)
