Pathogens & Hosts

Over twelve Phoma species have been reported to occur in Hawaii (Raabe, et al., 1981). The following is a list of the reported pathogens from this genus (Phoma) and the hosts they infect. The list is organized by the scientific name of the pathogen species (CAPITAL LETTERS), followed by the symptom or disease a given pathogen causes on the listed hosts.

PHOMA AGAPANTHI

  • African lily, lily of the Nile (Agapanthus africanus)

PHOMA BARRINGTONIAE

On leaves of:

  • Barringtonia racemosa

PHOMA DESTRUCTIVA

Fruit Rot, Leaf and Stem Blight:

  • tomato (Lycopersicon esculentum)

Leafspot:

  • potato (Solanum tuberosum)

PHOMA GLOMERATA

On Leaf of:

  • 'ohi'a lehua (Metrosideros collina)

PHOMA HENNINGSII

On Dead Pods of:

  • siris tree or white monkeypod (Albizia lebbek)

PHOMA HERBARUM

  • Jamaica vervain (Stachytarpheta jamaicensis)

PHOMA LINGAM

Black Leg:

  • rutabaga (Brassica campestris var. napobrassica)
  • cabbage (Brassica oleracea var. capitata)

PHOMA MACULARIS

On Dead Tissue of:

  • roselle (Hibiscus sabdariffa)

PHOMA MUSAE

  • banana (Musa acuminata, AAA)
  • kiawe, algaroba (Prosopis pallida)

PHOMA SP.

Black Pod Spot:

  • Prosopis sp.

Blossom End Rot:

  • guava (Psidium guajava)

Dieback:

  • Protea sp.

Fruit Rot:

  • eggplant (Solanum melongena)

Leafspot:

  • corn, maize (Zea mays)

On Leaves of:

  • Cheirodendron sp.
  • 'ohi'a lehua (Metrosideros collina)

On Submerged Branch of:

  • hau (Hibiscus tiliaceus)

Other:

  • pineapple (Ananas comosus)

PHOMA SUBCIRCINATA

Pod Blight:

  • sieva bean (Phaseolus lunatus)

PHOMA TERRESTRIS

  • Allium sp.
