Discover Africa

Students are invited to apply for an exciting study-abroad opportunity in South Africa in early July 2019. Take the class PEPS 491, African Ecology and Conservation Biology, and earn 3–6 credits in 14 days at the Balule Nature Reserve, part of the Greater Kruger Park, in the Limpopo Province of South Africa. The course will include formal lectures, field work, and interaction with local staff and students, concentrating on topic issues impacting conservation in South Africa. Students will have accommodation in an unfenced rustic camp or research facility in the reserve. The application deadline is December 31, but it’s best to apply sooner rather than later—the course is limited to five students! Applicants should submit a 2-page essay describing their interest in the course and how they anticipate benefitting from attending. The anticipated cost of $1,500 (final amount depends on exchange rates) covers accommodation, food, travel in South Africa, insurance, etc., but does not include flights nor the registration costs for 3 or 6 credits through the UHM Study Abroad Center. Submit your application to Mark Wright at markwrig@hawaii.edu.
