PATHway to Success
A JABSOM project that Jon-Paul Bingham (MBBE) is involved with has just been awarded a $19 million grant to fund undergraduate research. In a recent article at Hawaii News Now, J-P shared one of the reasons creating research opportunities for the students is so important: “The students get so enthused” by doing the research, he said. “You plant a seed … and they want more and more.” He is the director of PATHway to Biomedical Careers, which organizes and oversees student research activities at the partnering community colleges and private universities in conjunction with local campus coordinators. The primary focus is to introduce community college and undergraduate students early in their student careers to active, hands-on participation in actual biomedical research. PATHway also works closely with the campus coordinators on development of the laboratory experience (lab safety, ethics, presentation, scientific writing) and career consultation.
