The ‘Āina Is in Good Hands

There was lots of participation from NREM this year at the 25th Annual Hawaiʻi Conservation Conference (HCC). The 48 total participants from NREM, including researchers, Extension specialists, grad students, undergraduates, and post-doctoral fellows, gave 76 presentations over the two days of the conference, on subjects of great environmental importance and interest. Topics ranged from engaging local small-scale fishers in helping to mitigate deaths of black-tip sharks to creating a policy to restrict the imports of invasive plant species to the Islands; from the role of helicopters and drones in conservation to the use of indigenous knowledge to conserve endangered land snails. A common theme is that while there is much to be concerned about in terms of Hawai‘i’s natural resources and ecology, there are many opportunities and occasions for hope as well.
