, on the topic of “Effective Management of Natural Disasters: Conceptual, Empirical Issues and Case Studies.” The issue is being guest-edited by NREM Emeritus Professor Chennat Gopalakrishnan, who’s also the general editor for the journal. Five broad categories of natural disaster policies have been identified for in-depth study: risk management, vulnerability assessment, capacity building and resilience, disaster risk reduction-development linkage, and institutional design. As the call for papers explains, recent years have witnessed a dramatic increase in the human and economic impacts of natural disasters. Between 2003 and 2013, they have impacted the lives of 2 billion people, caused 1.1 million deaths, and resulted in total economic damages of $1.5 trillion. There has also been a steady increase in the intensity and frequency of natural disasters, and water disasters are especially significant in the U.S and globally. This topic is of considerable interest and relevance to Hawai‘i, so it’s especially important for UH researchers to share their perspectives.
