Ag Taking a Beating

Dean Comerford is quoted in a Washington Post article on the damage that Island agriculture has undergone thanks to Hurricane Lane on top of the eruptions on the Big Island and the heavy flooding that Kaua‘i experienced in April. “It’s been a tough year for agriculture in Hawai‘i,” he confirms—he says it’s too soon to know what all the impacts will be, but they’re serious. He notes that in the case of the volcano, not only this year’s crop but in some cases the very land that it’s grown on has been destroyed. This damage to the industry means that it’s particularly good timing that CTAHR will soon have ten new Extension positions, as Extension is an important tool in helping farmers and producers get back on their feet…though even CTAHR’s hardworking agents can’t bring back land covered with lava!
