Shu-Hwa Lin and Ju-Young Kang (FCS/FDM) co-authored a paper recently published in the Journal of Textile Engineering & Fashion Technology, “Fitting Simulation Evaluation on Personalized Avatars.” It examines visualization of fit of garment designs on two types of virtual avatars: a personalized avatar developed through personalized body-scanning technology, and one from a pre-programmed software program. Design professionals rated the appearance, smoothness, and fit of the front, back, and side views of each garment and avatar and also gave qualitative assessments. The pre-programmed avatar scored higher on appearance, smoothness, and fit, and was also considered more aesthetically pleasing, but the self-scanned avatar showed more accurate body proportions. The paper also includes implications for further research.
