Have Your Medical Device and Wear It, Too

Into wearable tech? The FDM program is hosting a seminar presentation by visiting scholar Genny Lai entitled “3D Body Scan Apply on Intelligent Medical Garments with Smart-Cloth.”

  • Date: Friday, February 8, 2019
  • Time: 11:00–11:30 a.m.
  • Location: Miller Hall 112

Genny (Ching-I) Lai (left) is a PhD student in the Department of Design at National Yunlin University of Science and Technology, but she is visiting FDM to work under professor Shu Hwa Lin (right). Genny was a fashion designer for 25 years and now is an expert in the field of smart clothing.

As she explains, the idea of smart clothing was introduced around twenty years ago to aid wearers in getting prompt access to medical knowledge and appropriate health care. Now there is ongoing cutting-edge multidisciplinary research into textile fibers, biomedical sensors, and wireless and mobile telecommunications integrated with telemedicine that is aimed at developing increasingly intelligent biomedical clothing (IBC). For patients with certain heart conditions, postoperative electrocardiogram (ECG) monitoring is essential, and the garments that Genny is working on now are able to do that for their wearers.
