A handful of lucky Fashion Design and Merchandising students travelled to attend Magic, the premier couture and fashion industry event held yearly in Las Vegas. FDM professor Andy Reilly escorted the students, who got to see lavish displays, attend seminars, and meet and mingle with some of fashion’s brightest stars. Symphony of the Hawaiian Birds continued to wow audience members as it was performed by the University of Hawai‘i at Manoa’s Wind Ensemble at Kaua‘i Community College. This was the first time the symphony was performed on the island of Kaua‘i, home to many of the native birds highlighted in the production. Many of the audience members were moved to tears by the realization of all that has been lost and is at risk.The performance, which arose from a project spearheaded by NREM’s Melissa Price, brings together music, art, and science to raise awareness of endangered native bird populations.
CTAHR is recruiting mentors for the Grow With Us Mentoring Program, which helps high school students from Waipahu and Leilehua High Schools to develop their readiness for college and careers, explore STEM and agricultural fields, and get hands-on experience in the community. The mentors will also gain experience in leadership, lesson planning, problem-solving, teamwork, and much more.
Extension agents Jennifer Hawkins (TPSS) and Jari Sugano (PEPS) helped to get the residents of Kalaupapa, Moloka‘i, growing, in response to a request by Na Pu‘u Wai, a Native Hawaiian healthcare program. They provided ground support in collaboration with the Department of Health and the U.S. National Parks Service.
Students had the opportunity to get some free food and make an investment in their future at CTAHR’s 2020 job fair, held in the Campus Center ballroom on Friday, February 28. Companies focusing on the subject matter in every CTAHR department from, agriculture and conservation to fashion and family science, were in attendance to meet, greet, and recruit future employees. Many of their employees or founders were CTAHR grads themselves.
