A career journalist becomes an Ag scientist

Back to the Plants

Constantly digging in the dirt as a kid, I’m not sure when I first became passionate about plants. It just seemed natural from the ground up, surely budding in my heart. My first jobs shed light into the puzzling plant kingdom, in the form of lawn care and landscaping work in the Sunshine State, along the Space Coast of Central Florida, a barrier island framed by river and ocean. I found solace in the natural world outdoors, in all plants fruiting, flowering, and growing, developing an affinity for palms of dreamy tropical isles.

Be Water Wise

UGC, Master Gardeners to host workshop Aug. 13

Be Water Wise

Join the Oʻahu Master Gardeners at the Urban Garden Center in Pearl City and learn about low-water use gardening with succulents at its Water-Wise Gardening Workshop. The morning event will give participants a glimpse into a low-water use garden, which can lead to bigger projects that enhance home landscapes while conserving water. Participants will also create a starter dish garden of succulents to take home (6 x 4 inch).

Designing a systems approach for sustainable production

Regenerative Turmeric

‘Olena, or turmeric, is a culinary and medicinal plant grown primarily in subtropical and tropical regions but used by cultures across the globe. In Hawai‘i, turmeric is a specialty crop valued at more than $1M with significant interest in organic cultivation. Although local producers are faced with various challenges, such as limitations on production space and fertilizer and pesticide use, these issues can be mitigated by optimizing a regenerative production system by implementing strategies such as intercropping.
