Almost 80 visitors joined the UH Insect Museum’s 7th annual Darwin Day celebration for live insect meet-and-greets, insect and marine arthropod exhibits, and snacks for insect-eating plants, lizards and humans.

STREET YOUTH

The Center on the Family, in partnership with Waikiki Health and Hale Kipa, just released the first comprehensive research study on homeless and runaway youth in Hawai‘i since the 1980s. The study offers a detailed snapshot of homeless and unaccompanied youth on O‘ahu, allowing for a better understanding of this population’s experiences, risk factors, well-being, and service needs.

PEPS faculty and grad students Islam Hamim, Wayne Borth, Josaiah Marquez, James Green, and Mike Melzer recently published a paper on transgenic papaya that attempts to explain why the complete and durable resistance to Papaya Ringspot Virus attained by Hawai‘i GM cultivars has not been duplicated elsewhere.

Barbara Kawakami, a 1979 Fashion Design and Merchandising alumna, was honored by the Hawai‘i Historical Society with the Kahu ‘Ikena (Caretaker of Knowledge) Award for her dedication to the preservation of Hawaiian history and her efforts to gather, record, translate, and share memories of Issei women in Hawai‘i.
