Doing Right by the Animals
4-H students in Kaua‘i County participated in a food animal quality assurance training which focused on how to be good stewards of livestock raised as market projects for the county fair. Youth for the Quality Care of Animals (YQCA) is a required training, which educates 4-H participants on proper animal handling, nutrition, medication withdrawal times, and leadership skills needed to have successful 4-H livestock projects, and this was Kaua‘i’s first annual YQCA training. Twenty-four kids participated and were certified by Kaua‘i’s Livestock Extension agent, Savannah Katulski, as being competent in food animal quality assurance. To find out more about YQCA or 4-H, you can get in touch with Savannah Katulski at katulski@hawaii.edu or Jeff Goodwin at jeffg3@hawaii.edu.
