Like Try Tri-Parenting?

The Center on the Family is hosting a series of brown bag talks this fall. The first talk is Friday, September 21, from 12 to 1 p.m. in Miller 101. Lori Yancura (FCS) will speak on “Tri-Parenting or Try Parenting: Online Posts About a Non-Traditional Family Structure.” As she explains, tri-parenting, a novel and under-researched family structure, encompasses a relationship whereby parental obligations and rights are held by more than two people. To address a lack of knowledge about public perceptions of tri-parenting, her recent study explored perspectives of tri-parenting with online methodology. She and her co-authors analyzed posted responses (N = 844) to an Associated Press article about tri-parenting posted on two websites. They identified four emergent themes in the responses (religious, political, legal, and social) and also analyzed valence (positive, neutral, negative). Public perceptions of tri-parenting, Lori explains, have implications for families in tri-parenting relationships.
