Shoot the Weeds

Herbicide Ballistic Technology, or HBT, is the practice of shooting hard-to-reach invasive weed trees with specially formulated paintball-type pellets filled with herbicide. One of the primary targets of this technique is miconia (Miconia calvescens), which chokes the watersheds of Maui and other sensitive environmental areas.

M. calvescens was introduced to a private nursery and botanical garden 50 years ago and subsequently escaped and spread throughout the forests of East Maui. A decades-long effort to eradicate this invasive species ensued. What has been the result of this effort?

Zoom in this Wednesday, April 1, at 3:30 p.m., to find out! In this latest installment in the Natural Resources & Environmental Management seminar series, NREM grad student David Lewis will discuss “Risk & Resources for Mitigating an Incipient Miconia calvescens Invasion.”
