A new UH-led project will use artificial intelligence to achieve sustainable water use in Hawaiʻi agriculture. It has received a $2.4 million grant from the U.S. Department of Agriculture and represents a significant step toward revolutionizing farming irrigation practices in our state.
By leveraging data from a dense network of weather stations across the islands and feeding it into an AI-enhanced irrigation-management system, the project will enable Hawaiʻi farmers to both reduce irrigation water and enhance yields.
“The AI-enhanced CropManage irrigation-scheduling software will assist farmers to better match water delivery to meet specific crop water needs with multiple benefits, including conservation of precious fresh water resources, increased profitability for farmers through the reduction in water costs, and increased overall sustainability of agriculture in Hawaiʻi,” says co-PI Jonathan Deenik of the Dept. of Tropical Plant and Soil Sciences.
