Kristin Lencz, the owner of Ku'u Hawaii (company website: kuuhawaii.com) and Aroma by K, visited our campus to join FDM 437 Entrepreneurship in Retail (Instructor: Youngjin Bahng) as a guest speaker on September 12th, 2023. Ku'u Hawaii provides face and body products made out of natural ingredients with the highest quality. Their Hawaii ocean and garden candle and candle holder series are very popular to both Hawaii local residents and tourists. During the class, Kristin shared her business experience from how she started her business to what her future plans are. She also shared her personal life story as a female entrepreneur and gave students sincere advice. In addition, students had a fun activity time making their own facial toner using natural ingredients and aroma essential oils. We truly appreciate Kristin's dedication to FDM, and her time and effort to inspire our students. -written by Youngjin Bahng

Listen to one of UHM's very own Fashion Design Merchandising professors, Dr. Andy Reilly talks about the meanings of dress, why people wear clothing, and why it is important. He discusses the origin of clothing (was it protection or something else like status or ritual), the power of consumers, and how clothing is a dynamic reflection of culture, society, psychology, economy, politics, art, philosophy, and technology (LINK: Spotify for Podcaster) -written by Michael Davis

During Spring 2023, in the course FDM 338 - 2D/3D Computer-Aided Design (CAD), students embarked on a journey of crafting 3D virtual garments and catwalks, fashion flats and illustrations, along with designing captivating graphics for t-shirts, all stemming from their design concepts. Under Dr. Ju-Young Kang's guidance, students utilized various fashion CAD software, including Optitex, Adobe Illustrator, and Adobe Photoshop. This experience provided students with valuable opportunities to explore the applications of technology in the fashion industry. Beyond showcasing their boundless creativity, this 2D/3D CAD project stands as a testament to the remarkable fusion of technology and imagination. Behold the exquisite 2D/3D fashion designs brought to life by our gifted students! (Watch the video and our photo album.) -written by Ju-Young Kang

Dr. Wolhee Do, Professor of Chonnam National University in South Korea, visited the University of Hawaii at Manoa from March to May of 2023 and gave FDM students guest speech in classes, FDM 221 Textiles (Instructor: Youngjin Bahng) and FDM 471 International Apparel Trade Issues (Instructor: Youngjin Bahng). Dr. Do introduced the most current digitalization of global textile and fashion companies across the world and the use of digital technology in smart fabrics, and shared her experience of how she developed patented apparel products and created a curriculum utilizing metaverse: Zepeto in South Korea. Most students were very excited to watch the virtual fashion show created on Zepeto and asked many questions about it. The 57th annual UH Manoa fashion show was held at the Hawaii convention center on April 30 and, by all accounts, it was an appreciable success. Nine seniors and twelve juniors formed the largest group of student designers at a UH fashion show in over 14 years, showcasing a solid year of hard work on collection concepts, themes, color pallets, and fabrics (Wach a video). The theme, “Supersonic,” was chosen to highlight the extraordinary engagement of the participants, especially the seniors, who came to the project intending to make a meaningful, lasting impression through their efforts. The show was particularly noteworthy since the COVID safeguards that hampered previous events were no longer in place and the venue was sold out well in advance. This year, fashion was clearly able to return to UH at supersonic velocity. As with any hugely successful venture, this year’s event was a broad-based, sincere team effort....[For the full article, click "Read more"]
