DEPARTMENT OF
Family and Consumer Sciences
Congrats to Kent Kobayashi of the Dept. of Tropical Plant and Soil Sciences, who was chosen to be the next consulting editor of Urban Horticulture and Controlled Environments in HortTechnology.
When Covid hit and public access to venues across the country took a nosedive, CTAHR’s Urban Garden Center did its best to stay open for research trials and to maintain the grounds. Staff and volunteers took advantage of the “down time” to refurbish the many gardens, structures and pathways, as well as add some brand new ones.
The food was great, the gift exchange was fun, the opportunity to socialize with our colleagues was very special, and a good time was had by all at the 2022 Maui County Faculty & Staff Appreciation meeting and luncheon!
Visitors to the Kaimukī Public Library will be greeted by 10 new trees planted by students in the Dept. of Tropical Plant and Soil Sciences. “This is the art of learning by doing,” says Andrew Kaufman. I just feel really privileged and I think that the mission of UH Mānoa and all of the other universities and colleges is to give back, not only to the ʻāina but to the people.”
Native Hawaiians are disproportionately affected by food insecurity and other issues in the food system. Yet, they and other indigenous people are underrepresented in the food science workforce. And just when the need for such expertise is increasing, there will be a predicted shortfall of graduates.
