A Taste of Knowledge

This year’s Taste of the Hawaiian Range, with its expanded emphasis on all things ag in Hawai‘i, was a huge success, and multimedia specialist Godwin Polendey was on hand to capture all the taste thrills and informational nuances—check out the Flickr page here. CTAHR is not only one of the sponsors of the Taste; the college’s Extension agents and specialists also provided helpful classroom presentations on several aspects of local agriculture and environmental sustainability. Komohana’s Sharon Motomura Wages shared information about the Food Safety Modernization Act, while Amjad Ahmad (TPSS) spoke on “Enhancing the Sustainability of Hawai‘i’s Agriculture: Local Inputs and Crop Diversity,” discussing CTAHR’s research into developing organic fertilizers using macadamia nut and animal byproducts, plus the suitability of legume crops for Hawai‘i’s growing conditions. Junior Extension agent for floriculture and nursery industries Russell Galanti explained “Why Organic Matter Matters in Soil,” and Extension forester J.B. Friday (NREM) gave some important updates on Rapid ‘Ohi‘a Death. Food for the mind and the ‘opu!
