Spots on Fruit



Anthracnose

Scientific Name: Colletotrichum gloeosporioides

 

Disease Type: Fungus

 

Plants Affected:

Papaya, Avocado, Mango, Banana, Yam, Chaote, Guava, Cucumber, Cacao, Passion Fruit (Lilikoi), Noni, Tomato, Beans, Grapefruit 

 

Symptom:

  • Spots (~5cm) that become sunken in fruit skin
  • Smaller spots light in color

 

Control:

  • Manage humidity levels (i.e. Plant in low-rainfall areas, improve aeration between plants)
  • Harvest ripened fruits immediately, and immerse in 118°F water for 20 minutes
  • Remove diseased fruits and plant parts from the area

Papaya

 

Symptom:

  • Dark green, slightly sunken rings on fruit
  • Yellow mosaic pattern on leaves, and streaks on petioles
  • Plant becomes stunted

 

Control:

  • Tolerant varieties
  • Sanitation-- avoid infected plants and materials.
