CTAHR engaged with nearly 500 students, teachers, and community members at the Manoa Experience 2018. Highlights included Jon-Paul Bingham’s (MBBE) cone snail laboratory, a competitive mini golf tournament, a succulent giveaway for potential future horticulturists, and a little lamb from Animal Sciences.
CTAHR alumnus Liangjie Dong made headlines with his latest invention—a paper filter made from bamboo fiber that removes lead, arsenic and bacteria from water and deactivates viruses.
Hawai‘i 4-H is highlighted in the National Institute for Food and Agriculture’s Annual Report. The section on youth development notes the STEM-enrichment activities, such as rocketry, that 4-H brings to youth in the Islands.
Koa is a key species in native forest recovery, but other trees are needed for long-term reforestation after a fire, Clay Trauernicht concludes in a Forest Ecology and Management article about his 14-year study in the Wai‘anae mountains.
