Fascinated by the idea of hydroponics but worry that it’s too complicated? Emeritus professor Bernie Kratky (TPSS) pioneered ways of designing non-circulating hydroponic systems that are easy to make and use. He recently released a new video, this one describing how to grow a variety of slow-bolting arugula, ‘Adagio’, in a non-circulating hydroponic tank.
‘Opihi are not known to be noisy creatures. But the ‘opihi lab went from quiet to loud in a millisecond when Anthony Mau welcomed the Punahou School kindergarteners on their February 27 field trip to CTAHR. For his dissertation under Jon-Paul Bingham, Mau is developing ‘opihi aquaculture methods that can support commercial production of both captive and wild populations.

The Blood Bank of Hawaii and the CTAHR Ambassadors offer a heartfelt thank-you to donors and supporters. The recent drive generated 50 registered donors, 14 of whom were first-time donors, and collected 31 units of blood. Since each unit of blood can be divided into three different components, CTAHR donors may have touched the lives of up to 93 patients!
FDM faculty Minako McCarthy accompanied 10 FDM students to the twice-yearly couture trade show extravaganza MAGIC 2019 in Las Vegas. Students attended seminars with speakers from Cotton Inc, Tukatech, Volcom, American Apparel, Pantone, WGSN, and many others. This was a great educational trip for them, giving inspiration for their future creations and projects as well as plenty of information about the industry.
