‘Opihi are not known to be noisy creatures. But the ‘opihi lab went from quiet to loud in a millisecond when Anthony Mau welcomed the Punahou School kindergarteners on their February 27 field trip to CTAHR. For his dissertation under Jon-Paul Bingham, Mau is developing ‘opihi aquaculture methods that can support commercial production of both captive and wild populations.
Alumna Teresa Morishita has established a scholarship through UH Foundation. Associate Dean for Academic Affairs and a professor of Poultry Medicine & Food Safety at Western University of Health Sciences College of Veterinary Medicine, she is a 1984 graduate of CTAHR’s undergrad Animal Sciences program and has fond memories of many ANSC faculty members.
The Blood Bank of Hawaii and the CTAHR Ambassadors offer a heartfelt thank-you to donors and supporters. The recent drive generated 50 registered donors, 14 of whom were first-time donors, and collected 31 units of blood. Since each unit of blood can be divided into three different components, CTAHR donors may have touched the lives of up to 93 patients!
FDM faculty Minako McCarthy accompanied 10 FDM students to the twice-yearly couture trade show extravaganza MAGIC 2019 in Las Vegas. Students attended seminars with speakers from Cotton Inc, Tukatech, Volcom, American Apparel, Pantone, WGSN, and many others. This was a great educational trip for them, giving inspiration for their future creations and projects as well as plenty of information about the industry.
The property wasn’t for sale at this Open House, but children and adults could get up close and personal with live invertebrates! On February 12, the UH Insect Museum, which has one of the largest collections of insects in the Pacific Basin, celebrated the 210th birthday of Darwin, a crucial contributor to the unifying principle of evolution, with some exciting activities.
