Getting Their Hands Dirty

Kids participating in Maui’s Big Brothers Big Sisters program took a literal field trip—to the GoFarm garden plots at UH-Maui College. GoFarm farm coach P.J. Oliveros showed the kids about farming, inspiring some with a new ambition: to become farmers when they grow up. GoFarm Hawai‘i is an extremely successful beginning farmer training program housed in CTAHR with classes throughout the Islands.

Food Branding

Aurora Saulo (TPSS) was invited by Food Quality & Safety Magazine to write a six-issue-a-year column titled “Global Interests.” The digital copy of her second article “Food Branding Matters: Consumers Care Who Makes Their Food and Where” has just been released. This is a timely discussion of the use of geographical indications on product labels, including the word “Hawaii.”

In Memoriam: Joseph Patrick O'Reilly

We are saddened to announce the passing of former faculty member Joseph Patrick O’Reilly. He worked as a CTAHR researcher in research methodology, a Fulbright Scholar, and an adjunct East West Center Researcher and USAID consultant, all of which led him to do research in 41 countries over 20 years. He received numerous teaching awards, including the UH Regent’s Medal for Excellence in Teaching.

The Art of Science

In conjunction with the Tester Symposium, students are invited to submit art that coordinates with the spirit of science and highlights the natural beauty of Hawai‘i. Students may submit artwork (paintings, sketches, video clips, photos, sculptures, etc.) to each of the following categories: Ocean Life, Ecosystems of the ‘Aina, and People and the Environment.

CTAHR’s High Tech

Two members of the CTAHR ‘ohana were among the six finalists chosen for the 2019 Titans of Tech – Startups by Pacific Business News! Soojin Jun (HNFAS, pictured) and his company Jun Innovations were chosen for his amazing supercooling technology, and Heidi Kuehnle, a former horticulturist in TPSS and still a collaborator in the field of anthurium breeding, was chosen for her start-up Kuehnle AgroSystems, Inc.
