Invade the Big Island

Secure your place at the Invasive Species Conference at Imiloa Astronomy Center in Hilo, Hawaii island on August 22–23 by registering here. This booking is free, but the registration fee will be due at the conference.

Many members of the CTAHR ‘ohana, from Plant and Environmental Protection Sciences, Tropical Plant and Soil Sciences, Molecular Biosciences and Bioengineering, Natural Resources and Environmental Management, and Cooperative Extension, will be giving presentations. They include associate dean for Extension Kelvin Sewake, Mike Melzer, Amjad Ahmad, Qing Li, James Friday, Zhiqiang Cheng, Keith Weiser, Rosemary Guiterrez, Andrea Kawabata, Matt Miyahira, Stuart Nakamoto, Robin Shimabuku, Shannon Wilson, Mark Thorne, Jennifer Mack, and Mark Wright.

Their topics include pests of trees as small as the fungus that causes ROD and as big as the coconut rhinoceros beetle (pictured); novel ways to deal with invasives such as allowing their natural predators to attack them or using them for compost; and infesters of iconic Hawai‘i crops such as coffee and macadamia nuts.
