Junior Extension agent Kylie Wong Tavares has been awarded a Roy A. Goff Memorial Endowment Fund scholarship of $750 in support of her coursework on “Quantifying Food Risk” and “Foodborne Disease Epidemiology.” This funding will allow her to better serve her clientele: as many outbreaks of foodborne disease have been linked to the consumption of fresh produce, these courses will help Kylie (and the CTAHR Food Safety Team) to better understand how to minimize grower risk, provide improved recommendations for the edible crop industry, and assist the increasing number of growers who are interested in creating small-scale manufactured or processed foods from their produce. The Roy A. Goff Endowment supports professional development for CTAHR Extension faculty and staff and is managed by representatives of Epsilon Sigma Phi Extension fraternity, Hawaii Extension Association of Family and Consumer Sciences, Hawaii Association of Extension 4-H Agents, and the Hawaii Association of County Agricultural Agents. The next call for applications for the scholarship will be in November—for information, you can email Julia Zee at zee@hawaii.edu.
