IN MEMORIAM: ERNEST HARRIS

We are very saddened to report that CTAHR’s 2017 Outstanding Alumnus, Dr. Ernest Harris, has passed away, just three months before his 90th birthday. Dr. Harris was internationally recognized for his innovative and effective methods for controlling tephritid fruit flies; last year he was inducted into the Agricultural Research Service (ARS) Hall of Fame, and he also received a Congressional Gold Medal, among numerous other awards. At Dr. Harris’s last entomological presentation, in 2012, he summarizes his USDA career and achievements. Former PEPS faculty Luc Leblanc recently completed a manuscript describing several new species of fruit flies, one of which he named Bactrocera ernesti in tribute to this great entomologist.
