In Their Own Words

Through collaboration with community partners, CTAHR Cooperative Extension was able to reach 14 Thai farmers on Kaua‘i and 10 Thai farmers on O‘ahu last week by providing bilingual workshops. On Kaua‘i, CTAHR junior Extension agent Emilie Kirk, who speaks Thai, and USDA-NRCS staff conducted a workshop on the benefits of conservation technologies, including high tunnels, efficient irrigation systems, and windbreaks, as well as presenting information on financial support available to farmers through the Environmental Quality Incentives Program (EQIP). Seven farmers filled out applications for the program with translation assistance from Emilie after the workshop. You can learn more about NRCS EQIP here. On O‘ahu, the Hawai‘i Agricultural Foundation contacted Jensen Uyeda and Emilie to provide bilingual Good Agricultural Practices (GAPs) training for Thai farmers leasing land in Kunia. The training increased awareness of important food safety issues, including the biology of major pathogen types, general sanitation, post-harvest handling, proper pesticide storage, and more. Farmers noted that both workshops were very informative and that they are interested in attending additional workshops in the future.
