To Animal Sciences, With Love

Alumna Teresa Morishita, DVM, PhD, Dipl. ACPV, has established a scholarship through UH Foundation. Associate Dean for Academic Affairs and a professor of Poultry Medicine & Food Safety at Western University of Health Sciences College of Veterinary Medicine, she also writes the monthly poultry health column “Fowl Talk” in Poultry Press and a bimonthly peafowl health column, “Pen Feathers,” in Peafowl Today.

Dr. Morishita is a 1984 graduate of CTAHR’s undergrad Animal Sciences program, and now she is giving back to the program with her scholarship. She has fond memories of many ANSC faculty members, including Jim Carpenter, Charlie Weems, Glen Fukumoto, Brent Buckley, Doug Vincent, Mike DuPonte, and Ruth Niino-DuPonte, and she credits them with the inspiration to pursue animal science and health careers. She also affectionately remembers the Wailale‘e livestock station, at which she worked and learned.

Dr. Morishita attended the University of California at Davis (UCD) and earned a dual DVM/MPVM degree. To gain additional skills in clinical avian medicine, she completed a residency in avian/poultry medicine from UCD and became a Diplomate of the American College of Poultry Veterinarians. Then she earned her PhD in comparative pathology from UCD.

Dr. Morishita was recently in town and met with some of today’s ANSC students. She plans to move back to Honolulu after her retirement, and HNFAS looks forward to welcoming her back to the ‘ohana.
