Happy 50th Earth Day!

As a way to raise awareness of Earth Day, students in CTAHR’s Sustainable Plant and Soil Health Management class have created a new video on Soil Health Management that illustrates the importance of keeping the soil covered.

The Sustainability 410 class, a joint offering of the Plant and Environmental Protection Sciences and Tropical Plant and Soil Sciences departments, aims to remind growers, who actively farm the soil to feed communities, and the rest of us to not forget to protect Mother Earth.

Students Dolly Autufuga, Wesley Honda, Roshan Paudel, and Sarah Pennington, working with CTAHR instructor Koon-Hui Wang and Extension staff, advocate for growing cover crops to reduce erosion, thus maintaining soil for crop roots to grow; prevent water runoff and pollution; maximize water infiltration to conserve water and mitigate drought problem in crop production; and sustain soil organisms that are crucial for soil nutrient cycling.

“It’s heartwarming to see young people in CTAHR so engaged in protecting the earth and learning how soil management is key to environmental health,” says Koon-Hui.

Take the Earth Day Survey

The UH Office of Sustainability and Mānoa Institutional Research Office invite Mānoa students, faculty, and staff to take the Earth Day Survey and help the university move forward with its sustainability initiatives. UH will draw three lucky winners to receive a @sustainableUH gift basket. Your name will not be associated with your response.
