Dig in and add some spice to your life! The Pearl City Urban Garden Center is hosting a Cooperative Extension workshop on “Multiplying Organic Bacterial Wilt-Free Ginger.” Pathogen-free planting material is essential when growing ginger, but there’s been limited access to organic seed pieces. Now you can find out how to grow your own!

  • Date: Thursday, January 29, 2019
  • Time: 2:00–4:00 p.m.
  • Location: Pearl City Urban Garden Center, 955 Kamehameha Highway, Pearl City, HI 96782
  • Registration: Go to Eventbrite to register

The workshop will be taught by Sharon Motomura Wages, Kylie Tavares, and Jensen Uyeda, all ag Extension agents who are familiar with edible ginger production in Hawai‘i and bacterial wilt disease. Participants will learn how to harvest ginger from pots; test ginger tissue for bacterial wilt using AgDia Immunostrips®; and properly cut, cure, and store seed pieces in preparation for planting. They’ll also learn the results of an organic seed-production trial conducted at the Poamoho Research Station and have access to planting material. The fee is $10 per person.
