Pueo Power

Come to the weekly Natural Resources and Environmental Management seminar on Wednesday, March 21, for a fascinating discussion, “Who Hoots Where? Insights Into the Distribution & Ecology of Hawaiian Short-Eared Owls, or Pueo.” NREM postdoctoral fellow Javier Cotin will speak about his research on pueo, or Hawaiian short-eared owls (Asio flammeus sandwichensis), which are state-listed as endangered on O'ahu. Several threats make this owl species particularly vulnerable, including habitat loss and degradation, nest predation by non-native species, natural fluctuations in prey abundance, and competition for prey from invasive species. In his study, Javier optimized his survey methodology to improve population estimates and define vegetation types important to population stability, in order to improve the management of this native terrestrial predator.
