Keep It Covered

O‘ahu County Extension offers cover-crop field day

Keep It Covered

Although conventional farming practices call for clearing away all growth from fields whenever food crops aren’t in the ground, there’s a lot of evidence that growing cover crops can have many beneficial effects on soil health, plant nutrition, and pest control. Find out more about this sustainable practice at the Cover Crop Field Day.

  • Date: Thursday, August 1st, 2019

  • Time: 10:00 a.m.–12:00 noon.

  • Location: Poamoho Research Station, 65-602 Kaukonahua Rd., Waialua

  • Registration is free.

This workshop will discuss growing brown mustard and oil radish cover crops. It will offer science-based information about biofumigation, suppression of plant-parasitic nematodes and soil-borne fungi, beneficial effects of green manure, enhancement of soil health, and establishment of cover crops using Smile Hose technology. Presenters include nematologists Koon-Hui Wang (Plant and Environmental Protection Sciences) and Philip Waisen and O‘ahu County Extension agents.
